The 'Hamptons'
A word that instantly conjures images of a beautiful home with white picket fencing, stately columns, artistic French doors, and external walls featuring eye-catching weatherboard cladding. A symbol of the picture-perfect family abode thanks to pop culture, the Hamptons Home has become one of the most iconic home designs around the world. But where does the design originate from?
On the eastern side of Long Island in the USA lies a group of towns and villages called The Hamptons. Popular amongst New York City residents looking for a getaway from the concrete jungle, this seaside region is known for its rural setting, historic charm, and relaxed atmosphere. Scattered throughout these quaint towns are classic houses with an opulent atmosphere that provide the inspiration for the popular ‘Hamptons’ styled homes that we see today.
Here at Coral Homes, we’ve taken inspiration from the iconic Long Island home and added our own coastal twist, to create more of a laid-back atmosphere while maintaining a luxurious look of the Hamptons.
Capturing the essence of a Summer home, the Hamptons design has become one of the most popular house styles for new home builders in Australia over recent years. Whether you live by the coast, out in the country or in the suburbs of a bustling city, it’s a versatile home design that looks stunning in every location.
The rich heritage associated with the Hamptons theme has only helped to increase the popularity of the home design amongst home builders in Australia. With multiple Hamptons-themed facades and a vast range of colours to choose from at Coral Homes’ Selection Showrooms, customers are able to add their own flair and increase the street appeal of their home.
Stepping inside a Hamptons-inspired home, decadent yet light and bright interior furnishings and fittings abound. The kitchen is the greatest representation of this. Shaker-style cabinetry matches large French doors often seen leading to the patio; oversized pendant lights make an opulent statement hanging above; while generous island benches double as breakfast bars.
To complete the look, touches of elegance can be found throughout the home with natural textures such as rattan or wicker furniture, and curated works of art.
Australia’s take on the Hamptons home can’t just be all about looks; it has to be able to withstand our harsh Australian climate. One of our building partners, James Hardie, has developed a range of innovative weatherboards, specifically designed with Australian weather in mind. Made from Scyon™ Fibre Cement, these weatherboards offer the same charm as timber panelling, without the maintenance issues of shrinking, swelling, or warping that often come with traditional wooden panels.
James Hardie’s weatherboards have become as iconic as the Hamptons designs themselves amongst the building community and are integral to ensuring the popular Long-Island look holds up against the tough Aussie elements!
