How to style your dining table

Blog28

Your next dinner party will be the talk of the town

This is not an area to overlook when styling your home. Although it may seem like there’s not much you can do with your dining table, there’s actually plenty of ornamental options once you get your creative juices flowing. Lift this space from just a place to eat to an area of the home that your guests will fall in love with.

Start with pendant lighting over the table. This will immediately inject some wow factor into the space. If your dining table is close to the kitchen and you already have pendants over the island, cluster a series of downlights over the dining table instead so it can be well lit up. Grab some flora for the middle of the table and consider the size. A bigger bunch will make more of a statement but pay careful attention to the scale of your plant in comparison to the size of the table. A beautiful ceramic bowl full of citrus fruits like lemons, limes or oranges will add an additional element to freshen up the look. Handmade vessels in different sizes and shapes grouped together will also add a little something extra to your centre piece. Cluster everything in the middle of the table so the rest of the table still has space for use. Other items that work well on the dining table are crystals, or an oil defuser.

Pare back your centre piece to something that doesn’t obstruct your eye level when sitting down, you’ll want to be able to see your guests. If you’re planning on having a series of share dishes on the table, a small bowl of fruit, a small plant or a candle will work best for the centre. Add either your table runner and placemats or your tablecloth (or all three if you have them). Layer with your coasters, cutlery, plates and water glasses. Add some folded napkins on top of each plate, a water jug for the table as well as a basket of bread. A small bowl filled with olive oil topped with balsamic vinegar offers great visual appeal and works well with the bread. Some olives as well as salt and pepper will marry the mix.
